Etna is the highest active terrestrial volcano on the Eurasian plate. It has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Starting from the municipality of Zafferana Etnea after a brief stop for the tasting of typical products, oil, honey, capers and olives, you will climb towards its top through vineyards and valleys made of stratified lava. At one point, you will find yourself in a "lunar" landscape.
About two thousand meters high, you will reach the Monti Silvestri, two inactive craters. The lower crater is easily accessible and you can even enter it.
You can also try the hike to the upper crater. It's more strenuous and requires a little climbing: once at the top, you'll see the lower crater with its reddish colors and, in the distance, the Gulf of Catania.
