Laguardia, its history is written in its stones, which are waiting to be read by visitors. The subsoil of Laguardia is pierced by wineries or ‘caves’, carved under the houses and streets, about 20 feet deep.

The first piece of art we can see inside the church is the extraordinary front of “La Virgen de los Reyes” (The Kings' Virgin) whose building, made of sculptured stone, dates from the end of the 14th century, although its polychromy belongs to the end of the 17th century..
It is made of stone and it consists of a double Gothic arch that is sharply pointed, forming five archivolts, all of them profusely decorated.

The “caves” or family wine cellars, so characteristic of Laguardia, were made during that century.

Almost the whole town could be walked along in these underground corridors that make up the cellars. Each house has its own cellar deep in the ground; the size of the cellar is not proportionally related to the size of the house it belongs to, so there are huge houses with small cellars and vice versa. Their main function is keeping and preserving the wine in the most favourable conditions, although for some time in history they may have been used as shelter or military quarters where conspiracy took place and war drafts were made.

Casa de la Primicia (XI century) is the oldest building of Laguardia village, the capital of Rioja Alavesa. From the beginning of the XV century here the church collected the Tithes and First offerings farming taxes.
