The Duomo square offers a breathtaking view, especially at sunset, when the sun's rays 'light up' the polychrome marble of the buildings that form the religious complex of the city: the Baptistery, the Cathedral and Giotto's Bell Tower. In fact the chromatic homogeneity (green, white and red) beautifully harmonizes a stylistic variety.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, located in Florence, is one of the most famous masterpieces of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Its construction began in 1296, designed by Arnolfo di Cambio, and was completed in 1436 with the majestic dome by Filippo Brunelleschi, a remarkable engineering innovation.
Characterized by a façade of white, green, and pink marble, the cathedral is renowned for its impressive size and intricate decorative details. The Campanile of Giotto, next to the church, and the Baptistery of St. John, with the famous Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti, complete the magnificent complex.
The interior, relatively sober compared to the exterior, houses artworks by artists such as Paolo Uccello and Donatello. The dome, with its famous frescoes of the Last Judgment by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari, dominates Florence's skyline and remains one of the most admired architectural wonders in the world.
The tour will take us to the museum of "Opera del Duomo" where you will admire up close works of high value from the artistic heritage of the religious complex; to be noted, along with others, "La Pietà" by Michelangelo.
Please keep in mind that the Museum is closed on the first Tuesday of every month
With our Certified Guide you will have the opportunity to admire, inside, the stunning Byzantine mosaics of the vault while, outside, the masterpiece by Lorenzo Ghiberti, the east door of the Baptistery, commonly called 'the Gate of Paradise'.
Please keep in mind that the Mosaics of the Baptistery are undergoing restoration
