The original city was founded by the Greeks in the 6th century BC under the name of Epidaurus (or Epidauros, Greek: Ἐπίδαυρος). The surrounding area was inhabited by the Illyrians, who called the city Zaptal.
The town changed its name to Epidaurum when it came under Roman rule in 228 BC. Justinian I the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire sent his fleet to Cavtat during the Gothic War (535–554) and occupied the town.
You will visit familly own vinery where you will try wine what they produce and some snacks.
We will make a stop at Konavoski Dvori to see old mills that were turning raw produce into exportable goods for over 500 years. We will visit the source of Konavle's natural irrigation system, the River Ljuta, which is Croatian for “Angry”. We will look up at the tallest peak in southern Croatia, Sniježnica, which comes from the Croatian word for “snow”. We will even see a medieval watchtower from 1391 named “Sokol” after the Croatian word for “hawk”. Each of these natural and man-made landmarks were important in writing the history of Konavle, but they are equally important in keeping cultural traditions alive.
