About this experience

The Leopold Museum in the Museum Quarter has the largest collection of works by this Viennese expressionist. So here I offer you a crash-course on the problematic topics of 20th century art: the borderline between art and pornography, the relevance of the artist's personality to the interpretation of his works, and the question of the objective and subjective value of art.

We will restrict ourselves to those data from the artist's biography, whose traces can be clearly seen in his works. Most of our attention will be focused on the principles of interpretation that are relevant for 20th century art. We will analyse the difference between pornography and art, discuss the limits of self-expression and the impact of "problematic" works of art on society as a whole.

We will turn to the principles of art therapy, the works of Sigmund Freud and one of Scheherazade's tales for commentary on controversial works. This tour is suitable for those interested in Viennese Art Nouveau and those who want to find an approach to 20th century art.

Detailed itinerary

1
Stop 1

Leopold Museum is the best place in Vienna to see the most scandalous works of arts ever created in Vienna and understand the principle of the nowness of art. Leopold Museum features a permanent exhibition of Egon Schiele’s works aside from temporary expositions, and it is considered that Shiele’s exhibitionist works are still capable of inciting dubious reactions since many themes he covered in his pieces, such as the line between pornography and art, still cause heated discussions nowadays.
