The Selous game reserve, is Africa’s largest game reserve with an area of approximately 50,000 km2 representing more than 5% of Tanzania land surface. It is also one of Oldest reserve founded 1896.It is a biodiversity hotspot, comprising Miombo Woodland (70%) as well as open grassland, Riverine forest and Acacia bush. The Selous Game Reserve contains some of largest and most important population of Elephant, Buffaloes, Antelopes, Cats and Wild Dogs in Africa.
It was named after Englishman Sir Frederick Selous a famous big game hunter and early conservationist, who died at Beho Beho in this territory in 1917 while fighting against the Germans during world War 1.This pristine reserve was declared a world Heritage site in 1982.
