Osaka Castle has a long history, with its origins in the Osaka Honganji Temple (Ishiyama Honganji) of the Warring States period, the Ishiyama Battle fought against Oda Nobunaga, the construction of the castle by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, its fall during the Siege of Osaka, reconstruction by the Tokugawa shogunate, destruction by fire during the upheavals of the Meiji Restoration, and post-war park development, it has always been closely connected with Japanese history and has continued to the present day. The stone walls, moats, Otemon Gate, Tamon Yagura, Sengan Yagura and other ancient buildings that can be seen today are all from the Tokugawa period onwards, and the area has been designated as a Special Historic Site by the national government, with most of the ancient buildings being designated as Important Cultural Properties.
