The temple near Ximending which was completed in the early 1900s, was a branch temple established in Taiwan by the Nishi Honggan-ji in Kyoto.
Later it was damaged in a fire, and was partially renovated in 2006. Now you can see the renovated bell tower.
During the Japanese colonial period, Ximen Honglou was originally an indoor market called "Ximen Market." In the post-war era, the Octagon building was used as a performing arts venue. Today, the building is designated as a historical site by the city and serves as a cultural and creative space for exhibitions and performances.
One of Taipei's many temples dedicated to the "Mazu" (馬祖), a deity worshipped by many of southern Chinese heritage and sea-faring people. The temple has been in existence for the past 270 years as one of the 3 great temples of the Wanhua District, and was reconstructed after a fire, being completed in 1959 on Mazu's millennium anniversary.
