About this experience

IMPORTANT 2025–2026 Season Update

Tour duration around 4 hours.

October status: Currently the main ice cave we were planning to use for the winter is unsafe. However there are still plenty of the famous Vatnajökull blue ice to be seen on the glacier!

We are offering the Blue Ice Glacier Tour as the best and safest way to experience the magic of natural blue ice on Vatnajökull.

On this half-day adventure, you will step directly onto the glacier and explore vivid blue ice formations, and other ever-changing features of the ice. Guided by our experienced glacier guiding team, you’ll discover the glacier’s beauty in a safe, personal, and unforgettable way.

Because the glacier is constantly changing, conditions—and therefore the experience—may look very different from one week to the next. We monitor the changes daily to ensure you see the best blue ice formations of what Vatnajökull has to offer each day, with safety as our top priority.

Detailed itinerary

Stop 1

We will meet you in the main parking lot of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. You will be fitted to the safety equipment that is included on your tour. We recommend wearing warm and comfortable outdoor clothing to keep dry in the always changing Icelandic winter weather. Please be at our 4x4 at least 15 minutes prior to the departure.

Embark on the adventure in a 4x4 vehicle to the base of the glacier that is an adventure in itself. From there we hike 5-20 minutes up to the Ice Cave on uneven ground. As the glacier is always changing, the most beautiful and safest Ice Cave will be chosen depending on the conditions of each day.

The Ice Caves range between 30-70 meters. You can expect other groups in the same area. With plenty of time for exploration, photos, and learning about glacial history from your guide, this will be an experience you’ll never forget. Explore the most stunning, naturally shaped, blue Ice Cave with us!
