Local people once used these pigeon houses to collect pigeon droppings, which served as a natural fertilizer for the region’s vineyards and crops. The pigeons also played a role in communication and were considered symbols of peace and prosperity.

Along the valley, visitors can see fairy chimneys, rock formations, and ancient cave dwellings surrounded by lush greenery. The hiking trail through Pigeon Valley offers some of the most scenic views in Cappadocia, with Uçhisar Castle towering at one end and Göreme’s fairy chimneys visible at the other.

Narlıgöl Crater Lake is a beautiful volcanic lake located near the border of Aksaray and Niğde provinces, about 30 kilometers from the Ihlara Valley. Formed inside the crater of an extinct volcano, the lake has a striking heart-like shape when viewed from above, making it one of Cappadocia’s hidden natural gems.

The name Narlıgöl comes from the Turkish word nar, meaning pomegranate, reflecting both the reddish color of the surrounding volcanic rocks and the lake’s symbolic heart shape. The lake is approximately 65 meters deep and fed by underground hot springs, which keep its water slightly warm and rich in minerals year-round.

Local people believe the lake has healing properties due to its high mineral content, especially for skin and joint problems. Visitors often stop here to admire the peaceful landscape, take photos, and enjoy a relaxing moment surrounded by volcanic hills.

Ihlara Valley is one of the most impressive natural and historical sites in Cappadocia, located about 80 kilometers from Göreme. Carved by the Melendiz River thousands of years ago, the valley stretches for 14 kilometers and reaches depths of up to 150 meters, creating a lush, green canyon that contrasts sharply with the surrounding volcanic landscape.

During the early Christian period, Ihlara Valley served as a natural refuge for monks and settlers escaping persecution. Over time, they carved more than 100 rock-cut churches and dwellings into the valley walls, decorating many with vivid Byzantine frescoes that have survived for centuries. Notable examples include the Ağaçaltı Church, Pürenli Seki Church, and Yılanlı Church.

Today, visitors can enjoy hiking along the valley floor, following the path of the river through shady trees, small villages, and ancient cave chapels.

Belisırma Village lies in the heart of Ihlara Valley, along the banks of the Melendiz River. This peaceful village offers a perfect break during the Green Tour, where visitors enjoy lunch at riverside restaurants, surrounded by the valley’s natural beauty.

Yaprakhisar Village is a small but stunning settlement located near the end of Ihlara Valley, famous for its dramatic fairy chimneys and wide panoramic views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. The village offers one of the best vantage points in southern Cappadocia, overlooking the Melendiz River Canyon and the Selime Monastery in the distance.

Because of its unique, otherworldly scenery, Yaprakhisar is often compared to a natural film set — and indeed, scenes from several movies, including historical epics, have been filmed here. The fairy chimneys and rock formations in this area are larger and more rugged than those around Göreme, showing the geological power that shaped Cappadocia millions of years ago.

Derinkuyu Underground City is the largest and deepest excavated underground city in Cappadocia, reaching a depth of about 85 meters and capable of sheltering up to 20,000 people along with their animals and supplies.

Carved into soft volcanic rock, Derinkuyu was originally built by early Anatolian civilizations and later expanded by early Christians who used it as a refuge during invasions and religious persecution. The city consists of multiple levels connected by narrow tunnels, featuring living quarters, kitchens, stables, wine cellars, storage rooms, ventilation shafts, and even a missionary school and church.

One of the most impressive features is the massive circular stone doors that could be rolled across the tunnels to seal off each level for protection. The complex ventilation system and water wells show the incredible engineering skills of its builders, allowing people to live underground for extended periods.
