Detailed itinerary

1

Oudhna is located in the heart of a fertile plain in a gently rolling region. Uthina (its ancient name) had a gigantic capitol raised above two floors of vaulted rooms still visible. It was among the largest temples in Roman Africa. Its vast, well-preserved amphitheater is partly dug into a hill. It could accommodate 16,000 spectators.

2

The Zaghouan aqueduct , or Carthage aqueduct , is a Roman aqueduct , from the 2nd century , connecting the sources of the Zaghouan region to Carthage ( Tunisia ).

Restored in the 19th century , this work is the only one of this importance existing in Tunisia before the establishment of the French protectorate .

THEFebruary 17, 2012, the Tunisian government is proposing the Roman hydraulic complex of Zaghouan-Carthage, of which it is a part, for future classification on the list of world heritage sites drawn up by UNESCO [ 1 ] .

A portion of the aqueduct is internationally classified as an important bird conservation area (TN013), in particular because of the nesting of lesser kestrels ( Falco naumanni )

3

Built at an altitude of 289 m on the northern slope of the Djebel Zaghouan , the Temple of Waters is the nymphaeum of a spring (Aïn). This, with Aïn Ayed nearby, Aïn Djour and Aïn Ziga downstream [ 2 ] , fed the aqueduct built in the 2nd century to supply water to the city of Carthage , located 90 kilometers away with a studied gradient of 0.29 % . The aqueduct was built by the Emperor Hadrian [ 3 ] , [ 4 ] , who reigned over the Roman Empire from 117 until his death in 138. From the 13th century , it supplied the city of Tunis .

The remains of what could be the original nymphaeum (a small , much more modest basilica -type temple ) were discovered nearby in 2001, while the large temple dates from the Severine period .

4

City that jealously preserves its Andalusian heritage Visit the Temple of Waters, which marks the location of the source. This semi-circular collecting basin was a public fountain, under the protection of Neptune

5

Zriba ( Arabic : زريبة ) orHammam Zribais a town located about 60 kilometers south ofTunisat the foot of theDjebel Zaghouan.

Administratively attached to the governorate of Zaghouan , it constitutes a municipality with 11,819 inhabitants in 2014 .

There are hammams , which give it its name, as well as an old mine . Behind the main hammam lies the remains of a saint named Sidi Zekri.

The festival , which takes place there every year in July, allows you to discover the city through several cultural activities.

Zriba also has a 143-hectare industrial zone which benefits from the skills of the local workforce.
