About this experience

Come explore the Bow River Flats where you have wide open panoramic views of 5 of the most photographed mountains in the Canadian Rockies.

These mountains get their distinctive shapes from the unique geology of the Rundle Thrust Fault but these mountains really come to life when you hear the ancient indigenous stories of how they are seen as living beings and sacred guardians.

On this Canmore Walking Tour, you'll learn the modern stories of how the mountains formed as well as the ancient stories of their creation from local indigenous legends.

You will have a chance to pause and contemplate with a guided mindful walking session and sitspot meditation to reflect on these stories and how these mountains inspire awe and wonder.

Bring your camera and prepare yourself for a completely different way of seeing the most iconic mountains of the Bow Valley during the golden hour as the sunset that lights up the mountains.

Detailed itinerary

1

Find your guide wearing a Banff hat and with clipboard at the Canmore Off-Leash Dog Park parking lot.

2

Enjoy the best view of the Three Sisters reflected in calm water at one of the best viewpoints in the Bow Valley.

Here you will learn the story of these iconic mountains from the 3 different perspective: as sacred mountains to local indigenous people, as a symbol of 3 cardinal virtues to European settlers and as a perfect example of a thrust fault by geologists.

You'll also hear the stories of other iconic mountains in the area like Mount Lougheed, Mount Rundle, Ha Ling and Cascade Mountain.

We'll also explore ancient trails by the Bow River, which have been important trading and pilgrimages routes for indigenous people on both sides of the Canadian Rockies for 1000s of years.

Most importantly, you'll have a chance to slow down and feel a deeper connection to the land by learning a practice for mindful walking that can use anytime to let go of stress and awaken your senses.

3

After the mindful walk, we'll explore what caught your eye and what interests your most in the ecosystem.

You'll learn to identify important local flora and fauna, including the most common wildflowers and bird songs.

You'll also get our digital field guide so you can identify everything you find on your adventures in the Canadian Rockies quickly using you smartphone after this tour.

We will stop for a sunset meditation at Bow River where you can sit for 10 minutes and savour the panoramic views of iconic local mountains Three Sisters, Ha Ling, Mount Rundle and Cascade Mountain.

If you're lucky, you may see coyotes, wolves and elk gathering across the river in the meadows or our famous local beavers harvesting red willow along the shores.
