Located on San Lázaro Hill, the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas is a military fortress built in 1657 during the Spanish colonial era to defend the territory by land.

It is known as "the impregnable" because although it suffered several attacks by enemies of the Spanish crown, it was never taken.

It is part of the national Cultural Heritage List, and in 1984 UNESCO included the "Port, Fortresses, and Monumental Complex of Cartagena de Indias" in the representative list of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
