Detailed itinerary

1

The huge expanse of grass you see on the other side of the canal is none other than the Passover. Its real name is the Mars field, but the Annecians still call it the Paquier, which means Pasture and recalls that space was once located outside the city

2
Stop 2 Pass by

We arrive at the Pont des Amours. Another symbolic place of the city. The bridge offers breathtaking views of the lake and Swan Island. His romantic name actually has a double meaning.

3

It’s time for you to reconnect with the surrounding beauty and enjoy your walk along the gardens of Europe. This English park has changed a lot. In medieval times, it housed what were called “health huts” installed on small islands lost in the middle of the swamps.

4

This strange sundial, from its original name, the Gnomon of Brother Arsène, is a 7-pointed star capable of measuring time. It’s a bit technical so I advise you to read the plate for more details.

5
Stop 5 Pass by

With this Swiss postcard look, Lake Annecy is the real Rising Star of the city! The second largest glacial lake in France, behind Le Bourget, this lake, protected from sewage discharge and closely monitored, has earned the nickname of the purest lake in Europe!

6

On the Town Inn Square, you have, as the name suggests on one side, the Town Inn and in front, the Church of Saint Maurice. That's a lot of churches for such a small town! Annecy is nicknamed “the city of 5 steeples”!

7

You now arrive at the Place de Saint-François-de-Sales, in front of the church of the same name. It is also called the parish of the Italians, for the simple reason that it is mainly frequented by the Italian community of Annecy.

8
Stop 8 Pass by

You see it and you’ve been waiting for it, so let’s attack right away via the famous Palais de l’Ile, more commonly known as the old prison. It is the most photographed monument in the city.

9

You noticed that the streets of Annecy remained very typical medieval. Fortified gates are a good example.

10

Here you are, facing Annecy Castle, overlooking the old town on the mountainside. Strategically placed to monitor the entire plain, it allowed to observe the movements on the road between Geneva and Italy.

11

There are many opportunities to take beautiful photos in Annecy! Here, no flowered canals or glittering lake, but the Saint Maurice Esplanade still offers you a beautiful panorama of the Savoyard rooftops with the beautiful mountains as a backdrop.

12

Here you are on the first stone bridge of Annecy, built in the 13th century. It allowed the route of the Alps that linked Geneva to Italy to cross the Thiou.

13

From the pier of the bishopric, you can observe a magnificent alignment of old houses flush with the water. A decor that leaves dreamers

14

Here you are in one of the main streets of the city. This is the first street that allowed to cross Annecy entirely by wagon!

15

Here we are in a much more modern square, St. Clair Square. A little ski resort side of the 80s, but whatever.

16

Here you are in front of one of the Thiou canals. Although this river is one of the smallest in France, barely 4 kilometres long, it has had a considerable impact on the creation and expansion of Annecy!

17

Some memories are to be marked with a white stone, others deserve a Golden Baluster. On Easter Day 1728, Jean Jacques Rousseau met Mme de Warens.

18

You now arrive in front of the Church of Our Lady of Liesse. It was founded in the 14th century by the Counts of Geneva who wanted a place worthy of the name to welcome their future burials.

19

When the Rue Royale becomes Rue du Pâquier, you can observe a very old shaft margin. This well dates back to the 15th century.

20

The Old Sales Inn you see in front of you is one of the few mansions in Annecy. It was built by the family of Sales, therefore descended from Saint Francis of Sales.
