Your guided experience starts at the bronze model of the historical core of Split, a detailed miniature of the old town and Diocletian’s Palace. I'll use this model to give you an overview of Split’s fascinating layout and history before stepping into the real thing.
We move on to the remarkably preserved substructures beneath Diocletian’s Palace, once used for storage and support, and more recently as a set for filming severl iconic scenes from the Game of Thrones series. These grand halls offer a glimpse into ancient engineering and everyday life, and are a perfect introduction to the palace’s imperial past.
From the substructures we emerge to the majestic Peristyle, the grand central courtyard of Diocletian’s Palace. Surrounded by towering columns and historic buildings, this open-air space was once the ceremonial heart of the palace and remains a vibrant gathering place today.
We’ll take a look at the Cathedral of Saint Domnius and its striking bell tower, which shapes Split’s iconic skyline. Originally built as Emperor Diocletian’s mausoleum, it is one of the oldest Catholic cathedrals still in use today.
We take a stop in front of the ancient Temple of Jupiter, a beautifully preserved Roman temple within Diocletian’s Palace.
We enter the Vestibulum, the grand entrance hall that serves as an introduction to the southern part of Diocletian’s Palace, where the emperor’s luxurious residential quarters are located.
After exploring the southern part of the palace, we pass by through the Eastern (Silver) Gate, one of the original entrances to Diocletian’s Palace.
Strolling down Dominisova Street, we'll discover how history and daily life intertwine. Locals cultivate a small urban garden here, adding green life to ancient stone.
Your walk leads us to the Golden Gate, once the ceremonial entrance to the palace. This is the perfect spot to learn more about Emperor Diocletian's rule.
Near the Golden Gate stands the statue of Grgur Ninski, a towering tribute to a medieval bishop who championed the Croatian language. His bronze toe, polished from years of hopeful touches, is waiting for your wish.
At People’s Square, we step into a lively blend of past and present. Once the political center of medieval Split, today it’s a favorite gathering spot, lined with cafés, shops, and centuries of layered architecture.
We stop at Fruit’s Square, a charming corner of Split surrounded by Venetian and Baroque architecture, that once was filled with market stalls selling fresh produce.
We finish your experience on the Riva, the heart of modern Split. After walking through centuries of history, this sunny promenade invites you to pause, reflect, and enjoy the city’s present-day charm.
