This millennium tour will allow you to discover (or rediscover) the history of the city of 100 bell towers over a long time, without focusing solely on a particular period.I plan the visit over a full day, to respect everyone’s rhythm and fully enjoy the discovery. History is at every corner, it is up to us to recognize it together!
Once the group is complete, we will take a time to take stock in 1025.
This year, Caen celebrates its millennium.. But what does 1025 mean? What did Caen look like in 1025?
During the 11th century, an essential figure in the history of France and England chose Caen as its capital. He is the founder of the abbey we are going to visit. We will also take a time to mention the "sister" building, the Abbey of the Ladies.
After discovering the old town and its timber-framed buildings, we will head to a church whose non-verticality may surprise a little... We will talk about the very special history that the city has with water, and this to this day.
Returning to the old town centre, we will make a stop in front of the Hotel d'Escoville, emblematic monument of the Renaissance, and which adjoins the current Tourist Office (possible stop for souvenir purchases)
Opposite the Hotel d'Escoville is one of the most beautiful churches in the city, whose rich history can be read in stone, with different phases of construction and reconstruction. Presentation of the building, then free walk.
We will then pass through the Vaugueux district, which retains its picturesque charm
We arrive at the castle of Caen, largely developed in the 11th century and very recently renovated for the opening of the millennium
Group presentation of the different parts of the fortified enclosure, then free walk around the walls (possibility to visit the Normandy Museum or the Museum of Fine Arts, not included in the tour)
Passage in front of the University completely rebuilt following the bombings of the Second World War. The statue in the courtyard represents a phoenix, symbol of the resurrection of the city
Small detour through the garden of plants and its tropical greenhouses
Return to our starting point, passing through the ditches Saint Julien, which keep track of the fortified city walls, then by the Place Saint Sauveur, whose current buildings were built by wealthy merchants of the eighteenth century
Meet the sign "CAEN" installed on the esplanade in front of the town hall
Return the ticket to the guide at the beginning of the tour
