It was also a military stronghold and was the focal point of the Scottish Wars of Independence in the 14th century.

On our way back to Edinburgh we will call at South Queensferry, a charming historic former royal burgh on the Firth of Forth. It's renowned for offering an unrivalled, sweeping triple view of the Forth's famous bridges: the iconic red Forth Bridge (rail), the Forth Road Bridge (road), and the modern Queensferry Crossing.
In winter the view is at dusk, adding to the allure of this iconic view.
