About this experience

This tour is not just a superficial walking tour through the City. It includes visits to the Cathedral of St. John and the Grand Master's Palace and Armory. I will guide through both locations so you can appreciate the significance of these two historic monuments that are unique in the Western World. Every sight and building of significance will be explained within the context of its historical and cultural background. It will nevertheless be a candid and memorable visit to one of the most iconic capitals of Europe.

The magnificent entrance to the City built by Gentlemen for Gentlemen. The formidable fortifications explained and how the entrance to this unique city transformed throughout the ages. We will appreciate the magnificent Triton fountain and walk past the Houses of Parliament and the site of Royal Opera House. You will hear about the history of Valletta as we make our way to the Upper Barracca Gardens past magnificent baroque monuments.

Auberge d'Italie and Auberge de Castille are within sight of each other. Hear the history of the Sovereign Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta and how the noblest European knights influence the fate of the Mediterranean for centuries.

St. John’s Co-Cathedral – A Baroque Masterpiece
Step inside St. John’s Co-Cathedral, one of the most breathtaking Baroque churches in Europe. Built by the Knights of St. John in the 16th century, this magnificent cathedral boasts a stunning gilded interior, intricate marble tombstones of the 400 knights buried there and awe-inspiring frescoes by Mattia Preti. The highlight of our visit is the Oratory, home to Caravaggio’s masterpiece The Beheading of St. John the Baptist—the only painting he ever signed. A true gem of Valletta, this cathedral is a must-see for its grandeur, history, and artistic treasures.

The Grand Master’s Palace – A Legacy of Power and Prestige:
Discover the Grand Master’s Palace, the historic heart of Valletta and the former seat of power of the Knights of St. John. This majestic palace, built in the 16th century, boasts richly decorated State Rooms, magnificent frescoes, and a stunning collection of period furniture and priceless Flemish tapestries*. We’ll also visit the Palace Armoury, home to an impressive collection of arms and armor once used by the knights in their battles. A visit here offers a glimpse into the grandeur, military might, and political influence of the knights who shaped Malta’s and the Mediterranean's history.

This vibrant street stretches from City Gate to Fort St. Elmo, lined with grand Baroque architecture, historic landmarks, charming cafés, and boutique shops. As we walk, I’ll point out key sites, including the National Library, Auberge de Provence and the Renzo Piano designed Houses of Parliament while sharing fascinating stories about Valletta’s past and present. Whether it’s history, shopping, or simply soaking in the atmosphere, Republic Street is the heartbeat of the city.
