About this experience

Elephanta Caves Tour focuses on learning about the Hindu God Lord Shiva. Different statues dating back to the 4th-5th centuries BC can be found in the caves, which are situated on Elephanta Island, about 10 km and an hour by boat from the Gateway of India.
The Portuguese named the Island ‘Elephanta’ after the statue of an elephant near the landing site. The caves house rock-cut temples dating back to the 5th century. Elephanta Island has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 to preserve the artwork.
The Elephanta caves complex is a collection of shrines, courtyards, inner cells, great halls, and porticoes arranged in the magnificent symmetry of Indian rock-cut architecture and filled with exquisite stone sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses.
