About this experience

It’s a train like no other. Departing from Talkeetna, the Hurricane Turn Train leaves civilization behind and makes a round-trip journey through the wilds of the Indian River Valley. Along the way, passengers may take advantage of the Hurricane’s unique flagstop service to get on or off the train anywhere along this backcountry route (due to the nature of this service, scheduled stop times may vary).

Locals have long loved the Hurricane for access to remote cabins, hunting and fishing, while visitors consider this train the Alaska Railroad’s best-kept secret for a truly authentic Alaskan experience – not to mention the panoramic views at the train’s turnaround point, Hurricane Gulch. On a clear day, Denali towers over the braided Susitna River.

Detailed itinerary

The Hurricane Turn departs and returns to Talkeetna, Alaska after a flagstop rail journey through the backcountry.
• Depart Talkeetna at 1:00 pm
• Arrive Talkeetna at 7:15 pm
No dining service; passengers are encouraged to bring their own food onboard; there are a number of tasty restaurants in Talkeetna that provide to-go lunches, as well as general stores.

Passengers may also take advantage of the Hurricane’s flagstop service as part of a guided tour, a memorable way to combine a trip on the train with a scenic float or jetboat excursion.

Important notes

BAGGAGE: Alaska Railroad passengers are allowed two pieces of checked baggage and one carry-on. Two extra pieces of baggage (for a total of four) may be checked for an additional fee. No single piece may weigh over 50 lbs. A special handling fee of $20 per bag applies to oversized bags, bicycles, and other recreational equipment. Firearms must be either disassembled (slide or bolt removed) or have a lock (trigger or cable type) installed to prevent operation, and must be in a locked case. Concealed weapons are not permitted onboard. Camping fuel, motor fuel and other hazardous items are not permitted on the Alaska Railroad. Animals must be transported in kennels in the baggage car. All bags must have name tags attached to them prior to being checked in for the train.

DINING SERVICES: There is no dining service on the Hurricane Turn Train

SCHEDULES AND FARES: Delays can occur with rail service. We recommend that you do not book your rail arrival and air departure on the same day. The Alaska Railroad will not be responsible for missed connections. Schedules, fares, and tours are subject to change without notice.

ALTERNATE TRANSPORTATION: The Alaska Railroad will provide the best alternate service available in the event of unforeseen circumstances that may require any part of our service to be altered.

ACCESSIBILITY: We are pleased to provide wheelchair lifts at all stations. Accessibility on other connecting modes of transport can vary, so please check with an agent for details.
