Time for the dome! We take the elevator ride to the first level, from there its 281 steps up to the top of the dome.
From the top you'll see the most incredible views over St. Peter's Square and across the Tiber river to the ancient part of Rome
You will see St. Peter's Baldachin its a large Baroque sculpted bronze canopy.
The Baldachin is at the center of the crossing, and directly under the dome of the basilica. Designed by the Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. It was built to mark, in a monumental way, the place of St. Peter's tomb underneath.
Under the canopy is the high altar of the basilica
The Pieta is a work of Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo.
The sculpture is made in Carrara marble its situated in the first chapel on the north side of after the entrance of the basilica.
