Built in 1787 by Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini, the villa is famous for its eighteenth-century loggia and terraced gardens offering panoramic views of the lake. In the 20th century, entrepreneur and explorer Guido Monzino acquired the villa, enriching it with memorabilia from his expeditions and bequeathing it to the FAI in 1988. Today, Villa del Balbianello is open to the public and hosts events, weddings and film productions such as "Star Wars" and "James Bond Casino Royale".
