Built in 1807 by Captain Lemuel Moody, the Portland Observatory is the only known remaining maritime signal tower in the United States. Portland Head Light has a rich history dating back to 1791 when it was commissioned by George Washington and became Maine's oldest lighthouse. Once called the "most photographed house in the state" of Maine, the Wedding Cake House, known formally as the George W. Bourne House. George was a prominent ship builder and businessman that had grown up in the house next door which is now the Waldo Emerson Inn. His father built the federal brick house as a wedding present for George and his new bride Jane in 1825. The “icing” was added 26 years later starting in 1852 after a fire destroyed the barn.
