Detailed itinerary

1
Stop 1

The origins of the Vatican Museums may be traced back to a single marble sculpture that was acquired in the 16th century: Laocoön and His Sons. It was found on January 14, 1506, in a vineyard close to the Santa Maria Maggiore basilica in Rome. Giuliano da Sangallo and Michelangelo, who were employed by the Vatican, were dispatched by Pope Julius II to investigate the find. The Pope promptly bought the sculpture from the vineyard owner based on their suggestion. Exactly one month after its discovery, the Pope displayed the sculpture at the Vatican for public viewing. It depicts the Trojan priest Laocoön and his two sons, Antiphantes and Thymbraeus, being attacked by enormous serpents. The Lateran Museum was established by Pius by decree in 1854, incorporating some of the Vatican collections, while Benedict constructed the Museum Christianum.

October 2006 saw the permanent public opening of a Vatican Hill necropolis' excavations as part of the museums' 500th anniversary celebrations.

Stop 2

Prominently positioned in the Cortile della Pigna at the Vatican Museums, Sfera con Sfera (Sphere within a Sphere) is a captivating bronze sculpture by acclaimed Italian artist Arnaldo Pomodoro. Comprising two concentric spheres with fragmented surfaces revealing intricate inner workings reminiscent of mechanical cogs, the piece offers a striking metaphor for the modern world’s complexity and fragility. First conceived in the early 1960s, Pomodoro’s ongoing series of spherical sculptures delves into the interplay between progress and disintegration, highlighting the inner tensions and delicate equilibrium that define contemporary global systems.

3

The Gallery of Maps offers a fascinating blend of artistic expression and scientific knowledge, featuring elaborate cartographic frescoes that depict Italy’s 16th-century geography. This extraordinary hall leads visitors on a historical voyage, displaying vivid and intricately painted regional maps that combine aesthetic mastery with remarkable geographic accuracy.

4

The Pinecone Courtyard at the Vatican Museums is a peaceful retreat where classical design harmonizes with lush greenery. At the heart of the courtyard stands the striking bronze Pigna statue, often credited to Donato Bramante, which serves as a lasting symbol of both artistic and historical importance. This serene space encourages visitors to slow down, reflect, and take in the perfect blend of cultural heritage and aesthetic beauty.

5
Stop 5

Following a journey through the Vatican Museums' extraordinary halls, visitors are led into the breathtaking Sistine Chapel—an intimate papal sanctuary and a pinnacle of Renaissance artistry. Overhead, Michelangelo’s legendary ceiling unfolds, with The Creation of Adam portraying the iconic moment of divine spark. Dominating the altar wall, The Last Judgement stuns with its dramatic vision of the final reckoning. More than just a museum highlight, this revered chapel offers a profound and unforgettable encounter with Michelangelo’s artistic brilliance.
