About this experience

Bluff Head (Devil's Fist)
The Oldest Rock in Hong Kong. About 400 million years ago, the sediments accumulated in the estuary delta formed sedimentary rocks.
"Devil's Fist", has been under weathering for millions of years, which looks like the same as human fingers. At the same time, the bottom of the rock has been under wave erosion for millions of years too, which looks exactly the same as our wrist.

Red Rock Gate (Reddest Coastline)
The whole coastline is red in colour and is particularly gorgeous under the sun. The red conglomerate and sandstone formed in the Cretaceous period show the semi-desert climate 140 million years ago.

The red sedimentary can mainly be found in the northeastern New Territories. These magnificent natural wonders are within the Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region in the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. In addition to the stunning red sedimentary rock

A lot of rock formations with different shapes during the hopping trip.

Detailed itinerary

1

Disembark at Bluff Head, the Oldest Rock Region of Hong Kong from 400 million years ago, 40 minutes time to explore the mysterious red rock, featuring 3 spots.

Bluff Head Devil's Fist
About 400 million years ago, sediments such as sand, silt, and mud were washed down from high places by rivers and accumulated in lowlands and rivers. Over time, the sediments were piled up layer by layer. As time went by, the sediments underneath became more and more dense. After the rock exposed to the air surface, the power of weathering shaped the "fingers" of Devil's Fist. Meanwhile, sea erosion shaped the wrist of the rock!

Bluff Head Bacon Rock
Since the sedimentary rock composites of iron, which oxidize in a hot and dry climate, making the rock reddish in color.

Bluff Head Sea Caves
Sea caves here are mainly formed by the weathering effect rather than the sea erosion, as those rocks are sedimentary rock

If you are lucky enough, you may find fossils, such as Ammonite!

How the Shape of the Rock in Red Rock Gate is Formed?
Since each layer of sedimentary rock has different compositions, it has different resistance to weathering and erosion. The main rock could be find here are sandstone, siltstone and conglomerate rock

Why the Rock in Red Rock Gate is Red?
About 140 million years ago, the climate was extremely dry and affected by groundwater, the iron in the rock formations oxidized and turned red. Subsequently, the sedimentary rock layers accumulated on the sea floor were exposed to the surface due to the pushing of plate movements. Therefore, the rocks we saw in Red Rock Gate were a fiery pink color

Recently, Port Island in Hong Kong has discovered dinosaur fossils and become an island that is prohibited to disembark on.

Our tour guide will explain the geology history of Port Island on the speedboat, where they find the dinosaur and explore this mysterious dinosaur island, the magnificent red sedimentary rock with different shape,
