Walking around Old Town
Welcome to the historic heart of Dubrovnik! On this two-hour tour, we will explore together the secrets and wonders of the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will start at the Pile Gate with an explanation of the Republic of Ragusa and the way in which the Ragusians were able to maintain independence for so many years.
At this point, I will explain the walls and fortresses that the Ragusians built to defend the city and why they did so. We are not going to climb the walls.
Upon entering the Old Town, we will encounter very famous examples of architecture. One of them is the Franciscan Monastery of Dubrovnik, an outstanding example of Franciscan architecture in the city. Founded in the 14th century, this monastery is known for its sober elegance and its Gothic-Renaissance style cloister. Additionally, we will highlight the interesting story behind the construction of the aqueduct system in Dubrovnik.
Passing through one of the most famous streets in Europe, we will learn a lot about the earthquakes that affected Dubrovnik in the past and the architecture of the buildings in response to these events. Additionally, I will explain the history of the Dubrovnik Jewish Ghetto.
St. Blaise's Church is an iconic symbol of Dubrovnik, dedicated to the city's patron saint. Its baroque architecture and impressive façade are outstanding examples of the city's cultural heritage. On the other hand, the Sponza Palace is a magnificent Renaissance building that once served as a customs and treasury. Its elegant design and its history as an administrative center make it an essential architectural gem during a visit to Dubrovnik.
In front of the Rector's Palace we will learn how the government of the Republic of Ragusa worked.
The Church of Saint Ignatius is a magnificent example of baroque architecture in Dubrovnik. As for the famous Jesuit stairs, they are a symbol of Dubrovnik's baroque style and are also recognized for having been the setting for the series "Game of Thrones."
Our last point will be the Old Port of Dubrovnik, where I will explain our relationship with the Ottomans and the fortresses found in this part of the city.
Meet us at the main gate of Dubrovnik, the Pile Gate. Almost all bus lines pass through Pile. If you are located in the Lapad area, I recommend lines 4 and 6. If you are located in the Gruž area, then lines 1a or 1b. I'll wait for you with your NAME on a sign.
