Experience the biggest Natural Park of the whole Balkan, where bears and lynxes roam the earth! The Natural Park of Mavrovo is known for high mountain peaks, beautiful lakes, deep canyons and dense forest, that abound with diverse wildlife.
For centuries, shepherds have brought their sheep here to escape the scorching valley heat. If lucky, you can encounter one of these shepherds.
When entering the Natural Park of Mavrovo, you will be dropped off in the middle of the mountains. From here, after a small break the hike will start through grasslands covering plateaus and mountain ridges around Mali Sar. During the summer the area is covered in countless mountain flowers. Hike until you reach Galicnik, the most iconic village in the whole country!
On the way back, you’ll have the chance to make a quick stop at the famous submerged church. Note that this depends on the level of the water. This is a great opportunity to make a photo before returning to Ohrid.
Pickup included
The starting point will be in the mountains of the national park Mavrovo. The tour will start with an active hike of approx. 90 minutes. Our local mountain guide will tell you about the magnificent flora and fauna in this region. Plenty of photo stops will be made to enjoy the panoramic views of the green mountains and the Lake of Mavrovo.
Furthermore, the van will pick you up to bring you to a wooden house of one of the shepherds. If home, you'll be able to meet the sheep's and the accompanying dogs. If lucky, we can receive some of his cheese.
When entering the village of Galicnik, you will have free time. Here you will have the opportunity to relax, have some coffee and enjoy your packed meal.
After break time, our guide will start his tour in Galicnik and the surrounding area. Here you visit the small ancient amphitheater and the church. Our guide will explain the importance of this 1500m. high mountain village, and the history regarding the Macedonian wedding, Mijaks and the movies.
The last photo stop before heading back is one to remember. It is of the famous drown church, called church of St. Nicholas. This place is proclaimed by 'The Lonely Planet' as a must see.
