About this experience

This tour will allow the clients to see the most known cave from Romania "The Bear's Cave " from Chiscau, a village situated at around 90 km away from Oradea.

We will descend into the depths of the Bears Cave finding an extraordinary range of stalagmite and stalactite formations, coupled with traces of bears from many years ago.

The cave was named so, as numerous "cave bears" (Ursus spelaeus) were found in this cave.

The cave was visited by these large animals more than 15.000 years ago. But one day, a rock slide closed the entrance while more than 140 bears were still in the cave.

Becoming hungry, the bears killed one another until all were dead.

This story is told by their remains, tons of bear bones covering the floor of large parts of the cave with the marks of bear teeth.

Detailed itinerary

1

Bears’ Cave is unique in Romania and Europe, thanks to the stunning beauty of its rock formations, as well as the fossilized remains of long-extinct cave bears.Five complete cave bear skeletons were discovered in the Bears’ Gallery in 1984. Gone extinct approximately 100,000 years ago, cave bears (Ursus Spelaeus) were quite different from present-day bear species, weighing up to a ton and standing a terrifying four meters tall when standing on their hind paws. It’s safe to say you wouldn’t want to bump into one of these beasts when trying to find shelter in a cave.
