Detailed itinerary

1

The Corralejo Natural Park is a protected area (UNESCO) on the island of Fuerteventura. It has more than 2600 hectares.
It was classified by Enesco as a natural park in 1996.

The dunes of Corralejo are located in the north of the island, in the municipality of La Oliva. They are, after the white sandy beaches, the most important tourist attraction of the island.
They are the largest dunes in the Canary Islands!

If there is time left and the weather is okay, we stop on the dunes !

2

Explore the Caves. Walk (if you like) to the spectacular Ajuy caves, which are the oldest formations in the Canaries.

They belong to the basal complex of Fuerteventura, created by the submarine flow of lava and sediment that rose to the surface and began to form the island 100 million years ago in the Cretaceous period.

The rocks emerged from a depth of 3,000 metres and started to form the base that these days supports this island and that of Lanzarote.

The caves are extremely important from a geological and paleontological perspective and are among the 150 sites of primary geological interest in the world.

Visiting them means travelling back in time to the very origins of Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands themselves.

Did you knew?
• Walk to Ajuy caves are one of these examples of nature.
Declared a Natural Monument in 1987, they are part of Betancuria Rural Park.

If the weather conditions permit, we will also visit the caves on the west sea coast.

3

The old historical capital, Founded in 1404 by the Norman Knight Jean de Bethencourt. The oldest town in the Canary Island, until 1834 the capital of Fuerteventura.
Your guide will tell you all about it.

4

Beautiful little church of Fuerteventura saint Senora de la pena… The patron of Fuerteventura.
Built in 18 century…
Limestones are very present.

If time allows we will visit the little church…

5

Known for the film Exodus and the Church de la Pena.

Your guide will tell you all about the village and his famous Madonna….

6

The twin statues of Guise and Ayose represent the two ancient Kings who ruled the two Kingdoms of Fuerteventura, prior to the conquest in 1402.
Standing about 15 feet high (4.5 Meter hoog), they make an impressive sight at this small mirador.
The views from here are STUNNING!

7

AN other great Panoramic View on this daytrip.
From the Las Peñitas viewpoint, in Betancuria, you will see an evocative view: a green oasis in the middle of the desert.

The underground river that flows under the Las Peñitas ravine is created by human hands and forms a small lake dotted with native plants. The open esplanade of the viewpoint is the perfect place for taking quality photos.

Home of the local inhabitants, the chipmunks.

8

This is an amazing beautiful viewpoint. Your local guide will tell you everything about it… when the view is clear, we will have a Photoshop!

9

Fuste Castle, San Buenaventura Tower, or Caleta de Fuste is a defensive tower located in the town of Caleta de Fuste. It has been a Site of Cultural Interest since 1949.

Its main function was to defend the bay of Caleta de Fuste, one of the island's three main ports. In its early years of operation, its walls were expanded from the initial 3 meters to the current thickness of almost 6 meters, presumably after being damaged by a cannonball in a pirate attack.

In the 19th century, it passed into private hands, probably due to its loss of military usefulness. In the 1980s, a tourist complex was built, the pools of which now surround the building.

10

The volcán Calderon Hondo & surf village Lajares… Absolutely Amazing views and interesting story told by our local guide…

11

It is located in the north of the island and includes the islet of Lobos in its municipal area, being the second largest municipality in the Canary Islands and the second most populated on the island, after Puerto del Rosario.
It was the island capital from 1834, replacing Betancuria, until the transfer of the capital in 1860 to the city of Puerto del Rosario.

12

In addition to beaches, landscapes and gastronomy, there is much more to discover on Fuerteventura. The most extensive island of the archipelago has numerous places with their own character, such as picturesque villages rich in history. Also known for tomato cultivation and of course the series film Doctor Who. Up to you to discover with FuerteTravels guides!

13

The holy volcano Tindaya and his historic background.

It is here where we can admire the 501-metre-high anthracite volcano Tindaya…

For the pre-Hispanic Canary Islanders, the village and volcano of Tindaya on Fuerteventura was a sacred place, because they created a kind of open-air temple on the top, where they performed all kinds of rituals.

With these rites they summoned the rain or predicted astrological phenomena.

14

Statue of the walker and his son at Mirador de Valle de las Cuevas with volcanic mountain lands.

Your local multilingual guide will tell you all about the history and interesting facts…

15

Puerto del Rosario is the capital of the Canary Island of Fuerteventura.

We drive through the center so that you have a good impression.

We will have a photo stop in the port of the capital and visit with high tide the natural pool of the El Charco district in Puerto del Rosario!!

This city was founded around 1800 as a port for the export of soda and grain. Before 1957, the town was named Puerto de Cabras (Spanish for "goat port"), because of the nearby watering hole. Today the port serves passengers and goods.
There is also a large barracks of the Spanish Legion here.

You will also find the Nuestra Senora del Rosario Church and opposite it the Casa Museo de Unamuno (Spanish Literature).

The city also has a football club, called UD Fuerteventura.

16

An area of great landscape value

The protected landscape of Vallebrón is located between the towns of La Oliva and Puerto del Rosario, in the north of the island of Fuerteventura. It is a geomorphological entity that is representative of the island and of great landscape value.

It covers an area of almost 1,680 hectares, which represents 3.5% of the protected area of the island. Vallebrón forms a landscape characterised by an elongated ridge with a knife-shaped relief, flanked by two large U-shaped ravines, Valle Largo and Valle Chico.

The southernmost point of the ridge coincides with the Montaña de la Muda, a place of historical interest due to an archaeological site. To the southwest lies the town of Tindaya, which is bordered by the Montaña Quemada to the south and the Montaña de Tindaya to the north.

17

The 2nd largest municipalities of Fuerteventura. We visit the main streets while driving, so you get a good impression of this cozy tourist village known for its golf courses.

The area is frequented by a variety of tourists and has numerous hotels, shops, boutiques, bars, cafes and restaurants on or near the beaches.

In the main harbour is a castle built as a martello tower by the military engineer Claudio de Lisne in 1743.
