This historical district is attractive for its elegant landscape that has been preserved since the Edo period. The town, which stretches along the Tokaido Highway, prospered as the birthplace of Arimatsu shibori (shibori silk shaping), and today the town's town houses and merchant houses from those days still remain. The town is lined with beautiful machiya-style buildings with white-walled storehouses and lattice doors, and visitors can enjoy strolling around in a quiet and tranquil atmosphere. In addition, tie-dyed curtains and signboards are displayed throughout the town, giving visitors a sense of a town where traditional crafts are still alive. Cafes and galleries are also scattered throughout the town, offering a peaceful blend of the traditional and the modern. The streets of Arimatsu, are recommended for those who want to take a leisurely stroll while experiencing history and culture.
