Detailed itinerary

1

Tangier is a historic city in northwestern Morocco, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. Known for its unique blend of African, European, and Middle Eastern influences, the city is famous for its rich history, multicultural heritage, and vibrant arts scene. The medina, a maze of narrow alleys and souks, contrasts with European-style buildings in the newer parts of the city. Tangier’s coastal setting and mild Mediterranean climate make it a scenic destination, while recent developments, like the Tangier-Med port, have turned it into a modern economic hub.

2

Ion Perdicaris was a wealthy American expatriate and socialite who lived in Tangier in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His story became famous due to a 1904 kidnapping incident, known as the "Perdicaris Affair," which sparked international diplomatic tensions. Perdicaris was abducted by a Moroccan tribal leader, Mulai Ahmed er Raisuni, who sought political leverage against the Moroccan Sultan. The U.S. government intervened with the memorable stance, “Perdicaris alive or Raisuni dead!” The crisis was ultimately resolved peacefully, and Perdicaris was released.

Perdicaris’s legacy lives on in Tangier, where he owned a beautiful estate known as the "Perdicaris Park" or "Rmilat." Now a public park, it offers scenic trails, lush greenery, and stunning views of the sea, making it a popular destination for locals and visitors.

The Hercules Caves are a popular natural and historical site located near Cap Spartel, just outside Tangier, Morocco. These caves are famous not only for their impressive beauty but also for their connection to Greek mythology, where they are said to be a resting place of the hero Hercules after he completed his Twelve Labors.

The caves feature an iconic, naturally shaped opening that resembles the map of Africa, allowing sunlight to create dramatic effects inside. The caves are partly natural and partly man-made; ancient Phoenicians are believed to have cut parts of the cave to extract stone for millstones, as circular carvings are visible on the walls.

The Caves of Hercules are an atmospheric blend of nature and legend, attracting visitors for both the history and the scenic views over the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a popular spot for sightseeing, exploring, and enjoying the myths and mysteries that make it a unique destination.

Stop 4

Cap Spartel is a stunning coastal promontory located about 14 kilometers west of Tangier, Morocco, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Mediterranean Sea. This scenic cape is famous for its natural beauty and historical significance as the northwestern tip of Africa. At Cap Spartel, the Cap Spartel Lighthouse, built in 1864, stands as a landmark guiding ships through the Strait of Gibraltar.

The cape offers breathtaking views of the ocean and is surrounded by lush forests and dramatic cliffs, making it a popular spot for tourists. Close by are the Caves of Hercules, another key attraction linked to Greek mythology, said to be where the hero Hercules rested after completing his Twelve Labors. Cap Spartel is a blend of natural wonder, history, and mythology, making it a must-visit near Tangier.

5

A kasbah is a historic fortress found in North African cities, often built to protect against invasions. Tangier’s Kasbah, overlooking the medina and the sea, is a must-visit landmark. It features narrow alleys, traditional Moroccan houses, and the Kasbah Museum, formerly a sultan’s palace, displaying Moroccan artifacts. Today, the area also has cafes, galleries, and markets, offering visitors a mix of history, architecture, and scenic views of the Strait of Gibraltar.

6

The medina is the historic old town found in many North African cities, characterized by its maze-like alleys, vibrant souks (markets), and traditional Moroccan architecture. Tangier’s medina is bustling with life, offering colorful shops, street vendors, and a variety of goods from spices to handcrafted items. Encircled by ancient walls, the medina is both a cultural and commercial heart of the city, filled with historic sites, cafes, and a blend of Moroccan, Arabic, and European influences. Its narrow, winding streets invite exploration, making it a must-see for visitors to Tangier.
