Stop 3

Pamukkale and the ancient Roman city of Hierapolis lies a vast spring heated by volcanic lava.
The water dissolves pure white calcium, saturates it, and carries it to the surface, where it gushes out and flows down a steep slope. Cooling in the open air, the calcium precipitates out of the water, sticks to the soil, and forms "cascades" of white calcium frozen into the stone called travertine, or thermal pools.
The water has been gushing out of Pamukkale for over two thousand years. The Romans built the spa city of Hierapolis so that citizens could come and enjoy the health benefits of the hot mineral water.
