Don't be fooled by the drab sounding name. The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is an incredible ancient feat of engineering on par in its ingenuity and sophistication with the Great Wall and Grand Canal. Dating back some 2,000 years, the system addressed two of the biggest problems besetting China's rulers: controlling flood-prone waterways and delivering much-needed water to parched land.
And at Dujiangyan, roughly 60km from Chengdu, a third-century BC official and engineer named Li Bing devised a scheme (still in use and much expanded today) to both control the dangerous Min River and use its waters to irrigate the surrounding farmland. For this, Li Bing remains a national hero of near mythic status, as attested to by the temple honoring the man and his achievement at Dujiangyan.
Next, You'll visit the Fulong (Dragon-Taming) Temple, and the hall built to honor Li Bing (legend has it that he, or perhaps his mythical son, captured a dragon here, thus ensuring the river would no longer be plagued by floods) and spend time in the surrounding Lidui Park. Then it's on to the magnificent 320-meter Anlan (Couple's) Suspension Bridge spanning the whole of the river at the foot of Mount Yulei.
After the lunch, your guide will escort you to your hotel. End of our services.
