Las Vegas artist Jesse Carson Smigel concedes that cats often crop up in his work. "I try to do different things, but a remarkably large percentage of my art is about cats," he told us, including a short-lived 26-foot-long digital mural of cats battling Borg cubes in outer space. "I think people have pretty much picked up on the idea that, yeah, I'm a cat guy."

Felines, however, were the furthest thing from Jesse's mind when he proposed a sculpture for the city's fledgling First Street Art Trail. It would be, he said, a nine-foot-tall obese tardigrade -- a usually microscopic "space bear" frequently featured in sci-fi -- tipping a top hat in greeting with one of its eight tiny arms. The idea did not go over well. "I don't think anybody liked that concept, aesthetically or philosophically," he said.

5

The memorial garden features a wall of remembrance, a grove of trees, shrubs, flowers, walkways of pavers, and benches.

6

Recycled Propaganda's designs often incorporate social and political commentary, with themes ranging from capitalism and consumerism to war, power, and media manipulation. The studio's artwork is often characterized by its use of striking colors, graphic iconography, and stylized typography.

7

11

Great-aunt Esther was a tough, smart, no-nonsense type who cared about people and gave good advice. “She was a big support to my mom when I was growing up, and that was huge,” says Trees. “She was always there for us.” Esther wrote the check that sent Chef Trees off to the CIA (after all, someone had to get him out of Alfio’s kitchen). And when she passed in 2016 she left James a nest egg – the money he needed to finally open his own restaurant.

The restaurant is named in her honor for all of this, and because everyone hopefully has someone like Aunt Esther. Whoever that person was for you, when you walk in the door we want you to feel like you’re at their house. We want you to feel cared for.
