Afternoon will visit the Summer Palace, formerly known as the Garden of Clear Yi, is located in the western suburbs of Beijing, 15 kilometers away from the city. It covers an area of about 290 hectares and is adjacent to the Old Summer Palace. It is a large landscape garden built on the base of Kunming Lake and Longevity Hill, modeled on Hangzhou West Lake and drawing on the design techniques of gardens in the South of the Yangtze River. It is also the most complete preserved royal palace and garden, known as the "Museum of Royal Gardens" and a national key tourist attraction.In 1750, Emperor Qianlong spent 4.48 million taels of silver to build the Garden of Clear Yi in order to honor his mother, In the 10th year of Xianfeng (1860), Qingyi Garden was burned down by British and French allied forces. In 1888, it was rebuilt and renamed the Summer Palace as a summer playground. In 1900,the Summer Palace was destroyed by the "Eight-Power Allied forces" and its treasures were looted.
