This beautiful ancient temple was originally sanctuary of the deified Theseus, the greatest ancient athenian hero, second only to Hercules greek hero. After the destruction of this temple by the enemies of the city it was rebuilt as temple of Hephaestus, ancient greek god of engineering and mechanics. It was built by the same engineers that after that construction built the great Parthenon and was built as a rehearsal for the greater project. This is why Theseion looks like a miniature of the Parthenon
