About this experience

For those seeking authentic cultural experiences in Japan, we present a full-scale traditional Japanese music performance produced by the National Theatre of Japan, a leading institution for classical performing arts. In this concert, you will experience the sound of shamisen, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument.

In a single program, audiences can experience five works, each from a different genre of traditional Japanese music, including shamisen music, narrative music, and instrumental pieces.

HOGAKU is Japanese classical music played on Japanese instruments, and most of the pieces that have been handed down to the present day were composed during the Edo period (1603-1868).

The theme of this program is “Snow.”

While real snow has no sound, Japanese traditional music expresses snow through the sounds of the drums and the shamisen. One of the highlights of this program is the way a particular melodic figure-associated with snow- appears and is adapted across multiple pieces.
