Orignally built as mausoleum for the Roman Emperor Adrian, it finally become the fortress for the Popes with a secret passage connecting the fortress and the Pope's building.

Built in the 18th century by an Italian artist, the steps are connecting Piazza di Spagna with the French church of Trinita' dei Monti. Right in front of the steps there is the famous fountain " La Barcaccia", made by Bernini.
