Red Town . Guba is also home to the famous Red Settlement, one of the largest Jewish communities in the world. The district is the home to the world’s largest community of Mountain Jews. Founded and populated by Mountain Jews, Red Village represents the most compact and active Jewish community in Azerbaijan. Living through vast political changes over the past 200 years, the community has both preserved and developed a unique cultural identity.
In this State Historical, Architectural and Ethnographic Reserve Khinalig, travelers will explore the village with visit to Khinalug museum and mosque. Khinalug, Khinalugh, or Khinalig (spelled Xinaliq in the Azerbaijani language) is an ancient Caucasian village going back to the Caucasian Albanian period. It is located just north of Quba in the middle of the Greater Caucasus mountains that divide Russia and the South Caucasus (2360m altitude). Khinalug is also the highest, most remote and isolated village in Azerbaijan and among the highest in the Caucasus. The weather changes dramatically during summer and winter, ranging from −20 °C to 18 °C. Village has a population of about 2,000 people. Because of its location, scenery and relative isolation, Khinalug is considered one of Azerbaijan’s premiere destinations for hikers and adventure travelers. Here the guests will observe Multi-Colored Mountains of Khyzy, often called the caramel mountains. The mountain landscape resembles the surface of the planet Mars, and sometimes looks like a layer cake. This natural phenomenon attracts tourists from all over the world, who subsequently splash out the received emotions in numerous photo shoots and statuses. According to some sources, these mountains are of volcanic origin, contain many belemnites and were formed by the oxidation of various rocks in particular copper.
