Detailed itinerary

Commonly known as MacArthur Park, this site stands as a prominent landmark in Leyte. It houses the renowned bronze statue of General Douglas MacArthur, commemorating his historic return to Leyte on October 20, 1944. Alongside the fearless General, statues of his landing Filipino companions—President Sergio Osmeña, General Carlos Romulo, and four soldiers—are also erected. Recognized for its immense historical significance, the park was designated as a National Historical Landmark in 2004.

Inscribed on a marble wall in front of the bronze statues is General MacArthur’s enduring promise to return, a pledge cherished by all Leyteños. This promise, fulfilled yet timeless, continues to inspire hope in the hearts of the present generation.

2

The Palo Cathedral is not only a religious landmark but also a significant historical edifice. During the Second World War, the church served as a hospital for the wounded from October 1944 to March 1945.

In November 2013, the church was among those that were heavily damaged, but even so, the same still became the refuge of several survivors. The church grounds also served as the last resting place of those who perished because of the typhoon.

Pope Francis himself visited the Cathedral on Janaury 17, 2015 and blessed the grave site where the victims of Typhoon Yolanda were buried. It is also in the same year, 2015 that the Palo Cathedral was declared as one of the pilgrim churches of the archdiocese by Archbishop John F. Du.

3

Located in Brgy. Guindapunan, Palo, Leyte, Philippines . It was built to replace the old capitol building which was damaged by a storm surge during super typhoon Yolanda in 2013 and an earthquake in 2019. Spanning 14 hectares, the Leyte Provincial Government Complex offers Segway tours to explore the significant historical landmarks of Leyte located within the complex.

4

The iconic San Juanico Bridge spans across the islands of Leyte and Samar, connecting Tacloban City to the town of Santa Rita, Samar. At a length of 2.6 kilometers, it held the title of the longest bridge in the Philippines until the opening of the new Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX) on April 27, 2022.

Constructed during the Marcos Administration in 1969, the bridge was originally named the “Philippine-Japan Friendship Bridge” as it was funded through Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) loans. However, there are assertions that its construction was not solely for public benefit but also as a gift from the late president to his wife, Imelda Marcos, a Tacloban native.

An enduring urban legend surrounding the San Juanico Bridge suggests that its foundation was somehow associated with a mysterious and macabre origin involving the blood of children.

5

The M/V Eva Jocelyn ship, originating from Basey, Samar, was swept during the ravages of Typhoon Yolanda, coming to rest in Bo. Anibong, Tacloban City, Leyte.

The M/V Eva Jocelyn Shrine in Leyte stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of the Filipino people in the aftermath of the devastating Typhoon Yolanda in 2013. This solemn memorial serves as a tribute to the lives lost and a reminder of the indomitable spirit that emerged from the wreckage.

6

The Santo Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum, colloquially referred to as the Imelda Marcos Museum, is a building in Tacloban, the Philippines. It was formerly owned by the Marcos family and now houses a museum. It was built from 1979 to 1981 by then-First Lady and wife of President Ferdinand Marcos, Imelda Marcos

The document discusses the Madonna of Japan monument in Tacloban City, Philippines. It was erected 33 years after World War II as a symbol of friendship between the Japanese and Filipino people. During the war, Leyte was an important battlefield and many locals suffered greatly. However, over time the Japanese and Filipinos established comradeship and support each other for progress. The monument commemorates the brave soldiers who fought and died in Leyte during World War II.

8

The Leyte Provincial Capitol, located in Tacloban, historically served as the seat of government for Leyte Province until 2019. Notably, during World War II, the building played a pivotal role, enduring damage during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines in the 1940s. From October 23, 1944, to February 27, 1945, it also functioned as the temporary national capitol, hosting the Philippine Commonwealth government as Allied forces liberated the islands from Japanese control. Inside this historic structure, American General Douglas MacArthur swore in Sergio Osmeña as President of the Philippines.

9

In the Island province of Leyte, in the heart of its Metropolis, Tacloban, lies a church with a tall belfy dedicated to the beloved King of Leyte and held most dear by Taclobanons - the centuries old Miraculous image of Santo Niño de Tacloban, the Protector of the Island of Leyte.

The Church of Santo Niño de Tacloban became the bastion of Catholicism in this city of 220,000, The Sto. Niño safeguards the evangelical faith of approximately 70% of Taclobanons who are Catholics. The Taclobanons continues to enjoy the miracles and graced lavished by their beloved King.
