The monastery of Tranfiguration of Jesus is the first monastic community in the area. Before blessed Athanasion of Mt Athos started this monastic community monks were living in Meteora only as hermits or ascetics. A monastery with a great almost 700 years history.

The monastery of Varlaam, which was the first that a pulley system was used from monks so they could bring materials on the top of the rock easier and safer. The monastery has an amazing museum and also you can admire the original pulley system and the frescoes of the great artist Frago Catellano.

Kalabaka is a town and seat of the municipality of Meteora in the Trikala regional unit. The Meteora monasteries are located near the town. A Greek inscription on the wall of one of the town's oldest churches (Saint John the Baptist) testifies to the existence of an ancient Greek settlement under the name Aiginion. In the 10th century AD, it was known as Stagoi (Σταγοί). The meaning of the word Kalabaka is of a Turkish origin and means "powerful fortress". Last returning stop is Kalabaka where the tour ends
