About this experience

Experience the enchanting beauty of nature's daily farewell as the sun sets in a breathtaking display of colors and tranquility. This tour is a journey into the heart of twilight, where the world transforms into a canvas of serene hues, and the sky itself becomes an artist.
The Meteora Sunset Tour starts with a visit to a monastery, either the Nunnery of St. Stephen or the Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapafsas (depending on the day). Then we head to the old town of Kalampaka, where you get to visit the Byzantine Church of the Dormition of Virgin Mary. Afterwards, we go to the old hermitages of Bandovas and right before the sun starts setting behind the beautiful rocks, we stop around Meteora for photos. This tour is finished by a final stop at the Psaropetra rock, the most panoramic viewpoint in the area to enjoy the sunset.

1

Kalabaka is a town and seat of the municipality of Meteora in the Trikala regional unit. The Meteora monasteries are located near the town. A Greek inscription on the wall of one of the town's oldest churches (Saint John the Baptist) testifies to the existence of an ancient Greek settlement under the name Aiginion. In the 10th century AD, it was known as Stagoi (Σταγοί). The meaning of the word Kalabaka is of a Turkish origin and means "powerful fortress".

3

Explore the first convent of the area. Monastery was founded in 14th century by monk Antonios and was bombed during WWII and depopulated. From 1941 monastery was empty of life since 1961 when nuns asked and took permition to reconstruct the broken section and organize the first convent of the area.

4

Explore a 1000 years old church which was built in the acropolis of kalabaka and over the ruins of an anccient temple of god Apollo. Turn yourself to archeologists and find all the ancient ruins from the temple embeded in the wall. See the amazing frescoes in there and an old mosaic floor revealed beneath current floor.

5

The monastery of Varlaam, which was the first that a pulley system was used from monks so they could bring materials on the top of the rock easier and safer. The monastery has an amazing museum and also you can admire the original pulley sytem and the frescoes of the great artist Frago catellano.

6

The monastery of Tranfiguration of Jesus is the first monastic community in the area. Before blessed Athanasion of Mt Athos started this monastic community monks were living in Meteora only as hermits or ascetics. A monastery with a great almost 700 years history.

7

The Monastery which is known for the James Bond movie for your eyes only and the third oldest in the area.

8

The convent of Santa Barbara. The monastery was founded in 16th century and is the newest from the 6 still active. Started as all of them as a men community, monks, but at the year 1988 and after the monastery was barely abandaned nuns asked and they took permition to create the second convevt of the area.
