Start with a 25minute scenic drive to the Chalet before walking the easy graded Organ Pipes Track (90 minutes). Take in the towering cliffs, snow gums and panoramic views of Hobart and surrounds. You will have a Local guide with a university level understanding of the mountain who knew the early hiking pioneers and can tell their stories. Then it’s time to drive to the summit. On the arrival of the mountain top, there is 35minute walk and scramble onto the trig point, an easy stroll to lookouts for amazing views of much of Tasmania. Also have a close up look at the unique alpine vegetation and geology. Then more remarkable views on the 35minute drive back to Hobart.
Passing through Hobart and South Hobart we point out some of the historic buildings and share interesting aspects of its history.
Passing through Fern Tree we will see the tall ferns, lush cool climate gardens and tell some of its stories.
Here we gaze up at the spectacular cliffs and summit of Mount Wellington and can purchase a hot drink at the Lost Freight Cafe half way up the mountain.
We drive up through the tree line to the chalet, a stone hut 1000m above sea level and commence walking the easy graded Organ Pipes Track. Here we experience colourful snow gums, towering dolerite cliffs and boulder fields along with stunning views of Hobart and its surrounds.
Furthermore, David, your guide will bring the place to life with his university level knowledge of botany and geology, and his family connections to the pioneer hikers with their first-hand stories.
We then ascend through increasingly good views of Hobart to the summit of Mt Wellington. We see colourful snow gums and subalpine vegetation and wildflowers.
Up here the views only get better, now including some of the mountains of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. We get to take a short walk to the trig point achieving our arrival at the highest point and pausing to take in the breathtaking vista. David will remember the first time he walked from the city all the way up here when he was 18 years old, it took him 5 hours.
• Then we get free time to check out and photograph from the Hobart and south West Wilderness viewing platforms. Up close we observe unique Tasmanian alpine vegetation and pillars of rock. At the summit, you will be filled with astonishment, to be launched forth into an ocean of natural goodness where you can see no limits.
