This tall volcanic-rock outcrop is one of Cappadocia's most prominent landmarks and visible for miles around. Riddled with tunnels, it was used for centuries by villagers as a place of refuge when enemy armies overtook the surrounding plains.

Goreme Open Air Museum is made up of cave churches painted Byzantine frescoes that speak of its monastic history under the leadership of the Kayseri Bishop of St. Basil. Many of the churches date back to as early as the 4th century AD

Love Valley is one of the most popular spots in Cappadocia. Loads of people come here to view sunset as it's said to be one of the best sunset spots around Göreme. Love Valley is specially famous for its intriguing rock formations that took penis-like shapes. Thus the name: Love Valley.

Nicknamed 'Imagination Valley' locally, Devrent Valley's rock formations are some of the best formed and most thickly clustered in Cappadocia. Most of the rosy rock cones are topped by flattish, darker stones of harder rock that sheltered the cones from the rain until all the surrounding rock was eaten away.

Pasabag Valley was once home to a hermitage of Christian monks who sought refuge in the valley's fairy chimneys during the early years of Christianity. They lived in the caves and chapels carved into the rocks, and some of these structures can still be seen today. The name "Monks Valley" reflects this history

Stop 9

Guvercinlik Vadisi (Pigeon Valley) earned its name from the countless man made dovecotes (Pigeon Houses) that have been carved into the soft volcanic tuff. Since ancient times Pigeons have been used in the Cappadocia region for food and fertiliser for the infertile soil. While pigeons no longer play such an important role in the area, their rocky homes have still been maintained by locals and can be found atop rock pillars and inside excavated cave houses and churches throughout the region, however, they are particularly numerous in this valley.

The city contained food stores, kitchens, stalls, churches, wine and oil presses, ventilation shafts, wells, and a religious school. The Derinkuyu underground city has at least eight levels and depth of 85 m and could have sheltered thousands of people.

Selime Monastery is an astonishing rock-cut construction and the largest religious structure in the Cappadocia region with a cathedral-sized church cut directly into the volcanic tuff. Inside, original frescoes can be found although some have been damaged by weather.

Ihlara Valley is a deep river canyon in Western Cappadocia with stunning nature and medieval cave churches. The Melendiz River flows year-round through a 14-kilometer valley floor. The flowing river, lush vegetation, historic churches, and towering cliff faces make Ihlara Valley (Greek, Peristrema Valley) a top destination in Cappadocia.
