According to some, the foundation stone was laid in the 13th century in Cranganore (present-day Kodungallur), said to be the place of the first Jewish settlement, and relocated to its present site in early 18th century. The architectural beauty of its front façade with its glass lamps, two-storey high ceiling decorated with wooden carvings of lotuses, and red and gold Holy Ark (a niche at an end of the prayer hall where the holy book of the Jews called Torah is kept behind curtains) was noteworthy in its heydays.
