The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima (Santuário de Fátima) is one of the world’s largest Catholic pilgrimage sites, attracting between 4 and 5 million visitors every year. Here, between 13th May and 13th October 1917, three shepherd children are believed to have witnessed six apparitions of the Virgin Mary, who imparted various messages and predictions about the future. During the last of these apparitions it is said that around 50,000 observers witnessed the sun moving around in the sky in a way which defied the laws of cosmology.

Nazare is a charming coastal town brimming with beaches, seafood restaurants and lookouts with superb ocean views.

Summer brings the crowds of sunbathers, but for most of the year, Nazaré is a surfers paradise. Its huge waves keep making headlines, with surfers riding waves of nearly 30 metres at Praia do Norte.

The town of Batalha developed alongside the Monastery of Santa Maria de Vitória, constructed in 1386 to keep a vow by Portuguese King Dom João I to the Virgin Mary that he would build it if Portugal defeated Castile at the Battle of Aljubarrota on 14th August 1385. Extravagant celebrations commemorating this victory are held next to the monastery in August of every year.

The main reason people visit, is to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site officially known as The Monastery of Santa Maria d'Alcobaça.

In the transept of the church are located the tombs of King Pedro I and his mistress, Inês de Castro, who was assassinated[1] in 1355 on orders of Pedro's father, King Afonso IV. After becoming king, Pedro ordered the remains of his beloved to be transferred to her tomb in Alcobaça and, according to a popular legend, had her crowned as queen of Portugal and ordered court members to pay her homage by kissing her decomposing hand.

Obidos was a gift from King Denis of Portugal to his queen on their wedding day in 1282; she had previously expressed her love for it. The cobbled streets, whitewashed homes with brightly painted trim, and dramatic medieval castle draw you into the magical setting of this ancient walled city.
