Krapina Neanderthal Museum is located near the excavation site Hušnjakovo, wherein 1899 the world's largest collection of Neanderthal fossil bones was found. More than nine hundred fossil bones of Neanderthals and numerous fossil remains of Pleistocene animals (woolly rhinoceros, cave bear, wolf, elk, giant deer, and many other ) were found in the cave sandstone deposits. Over a thousand pieces of stone tools were witness to the material culture of Krapina Neanderthals. The site dates back to 125 000 BC and it is one of the most significant paleoanthropological localities worldwide.
The Museum's architecture evokes the habitat of the prehistoric man: the semi-cave, the volume, proportions, and the front which are a result of the analysis done on the appearance of the ancient Krapina semi-cave.
