This captivating Sparta & Mystras excursion commences at the center of Athens city or hotels. Step into a comfortable, air-conditioned private vehicle, embarking on a 1.15-hour journey through the scenic beauty of Greece.
We will drive along the coast. You will see Greek seaside villages and the island of Salamis. The Corinth Canal is our first stop. It opened in 1892 and separates the Peloponnese peninsula from the rest of Greece. It connects the Saronic Gulf to the Corinthian Sea. You can walk across a pedestrian bridge to get a closer look at the canal. On some days, you can even go bungee jumping.
When you go up, you can see the citadel and enjoy the view. When you go down, you will find the palaces and courtyards. The monasteries are still in use and the monks will show you around. Inside the chapel, there is a plaque with a two-headed eagle. Konstantine Palaiologos kneeled on this plaque before becoming the last emperor.
Relish in 1 hour of free time. Your guide will drop you off at a convenient location, allowing you to savor lunch and indulge in some retail therapy.
Sparta is the eternal rival city of Athenian Democracy. It had a different Cosmo theory than ancient Greek standards. It was the birthplace of Helen of Troy and the Kingdom of Menelaus. In the ancient Greek period, Sparta was a purely military society. It had two Kings ruled by a few aristocrats. Leonidas and his 300 Spartans marched from Sparta to face the Persian army at Thermopylae in 480 BCE.
As our journey continues, we'll be compelled to pause before the majestic stadium, where the resolute statue of King Leonidas triumphantly awaits, signifying the glorious culmination of the legendary Spartathlon race, spanning an awe-inspiring distance of 245.3 kilometers from Athens to Sparta.
