Göreme Panorama is a popular viewpoint in Cappadocia, Turkey, known for its stunning panoramic views of the unique rock formations and fairy chimneys in the region. It's a great place to capture breathtaking photos of the landscape.
The Göreme Open Air Museum was founded in the fourth century as a center of religious education and thought by the Bishop of Kayseri, an important figure in the history of Christianity. The ideas of Saint Basil, who brought many innovations to Christianity, were first taught here.
Cappadocia is a semi-desert region in central Turkey. It is famous for its fairy chimneys - tall cone-shaped rock formations, which are especially numerous in Pasabag (Valley of the Monks) and the Goreme Valley. The region is also famous for its Bronze Age dwellings, which were carved out of the valleys by troglodytes (cavemen) and then used as shelters by early Christians. The 100-meter-deep Ihlara Canyon is home to many rock-hewn churches.
Pasabag in Cappadocia is located on the road to Zelve, coming from Goreme or Avanos. Highly remarkable earth pillars can be seen here, in the middle of a vineyard, hence the name of the place which means: the Pacha's vineyard. Pacha means "General", the military rank, in Turkish and it is a very common nick name. This site is also called Monks Valley. The name was derived from some cones carved in tuff stones which stand apart. Currently, there is a vineyard and a number of tuff cones standing right next to the road.
The valley is named for the many pigeon houses or dovecotes carved into the rocks and cliffs. Years ago the pigeons were used as message carriers, and their droppings were used as fertilizer and maybe even for use in making explosives.
Kaymakli is one of the largest underground cities in the Cappadocia Valley in modern Turkey. Located 18 kilometers from the provincial capital Nevsehir. Served as a refuge for early Christians fleeing religious persecution and Arab invasions.
A city and region in central Turkey, in the province of Nevsehir.
The city is located in the southeastern part of Il, at a distance of approximately 14 kilometers east of the city of Nevsehir, the administrative center of the province. The absolute height is 1043 meters above sea level.
An ancient fortress on top of a cliff with picturesque views of Cappadocia.
Situated on the edge of Göreme National Park, Uçhisar consists of an old village huddled around the base of a huge rock cone and a new one closer to the road that runs from Nevşehir town to Göreme. Like most of Cappadocia, Uçhisar once made a living from agriculture but now depends almost entirely on tourism, with many of its fine old stone houses turned into boutique hotels. French incomers and Turks returning from France have played a large part in the move to convert the houses into hotels.
A city and region in central Turkey, in the province of Nevsehir.
At various times the city was under the rule of the Hittites, Assyrians, Phrygians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and, finally, the Ottomans. Some researchers identify Avanos with the Hittite Zuwinasa, the Assyrian Nenansa and the Byzantine Venessa. In 1202, by order of the Konya Sultan Kay Qubad I, the Aladdin Jami Mosque was founded in the city, which is one of the most famous architectural monuments of the city.
