About this experience

Crowning a perpendicular cliff, Rao Jodha in 1459 AD founded the Mehrangarh fort. It houses a palace intricately adorned with long carved panels and latticed windows exquisitely wrought from red sandstone.

Jaswant Thada built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh 2nd in 1899 AD; the imposing white marble memorial marks the site of a royal crematorium.

Built by Maharaja Umaid Singh (1929-1942), and named after him, Umaid Bhawan Palace is an exquisite palace, because of the local chitter sandstone used. It is a splendid example of Indo-Colonial art and deco style of the 30s.

Stop 1

The 5 km long majestic fort on 125 m high hill is one of the most impressive & formidable structures. Although invincible from the outside, the defence has four gates approached by winding road. Within the fort are some magnificent palaces with marvellously carved panels, latticed windows and evocative names.

These are the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Sileh Khana & Daulat Khana. These Palaces house a fabulous collection of trappings of Indian royalty including a superb collection of palanquins, elephant howdahs, miniature paintings of various schools, musical instruments, costumes.

2
Stop 2

The imposing white marble memorial marks the site of a royal crematorium. It houses portraits of successive rulers. The four cenotaphs around here commemorate notable acts of bravery and generosity of the four successive rulers.

3
Stop 3

This exquisite palace is also known as Chittar Palace, Because of the local chitter sandstone used. It is a splendid example of Indo-colonial art and deco style of the 30s. A unique feature of this palace is that the hand-chiselled sandstone blocks have been put together in a unique interlocking system: there is no mortar binding.

4

Mandore, located about 9 kms north of the main Jodhpur city, was once the capital of the kingdom of Marwar before Rao Jodha moved it to Mehrangarh and the newly founded city of Jodhpur. This proud village was home to a substantially large fort and township. After subsequently moving to Jodhpur and the declining importance of Mandore, it did not see the sort of progress as did Mehrangarh. So, all that remains today are some assorted buildings and the exquisite Mandore Garden.

5

The Clock Tower, locally known as "Ghanta Ghar," was constructed by Maharaja Sardar Singh in the late 19th century. It stands as a prominent landmark in Jodhpur, symbolizing the city's rich history and architectural prowess. The tower is located near the bustling Sadar Market, which was established around the same time and has since become one of the city's most vibrant marketplaces. Sadar Market is renowned for its traditional Rajasthani goods, including textiles, spices, handicrafts, and antiques. It offers a glimpse into the daily life and culture of Jodhpur, making it a popular spot for both locals and tourists. The market's narrow lanes and lively atmosphere provide an authentic shopping experience, reflecting the city's heritage and traditions.

6

oorji Ka Jhalra, also known as the Toorji Stepwell, was constructed in the 1740s by Queen Maharaja Abhay Singh's consort, as part of the region's tradition where royal women oversaw the building of public water structures. This intricately designed stepwell reflects the impressive engineering and architectural skills of the time, featuring finely carved sandstone steps that descend into the well, which was once a vital water source for the local community. The stepwell showcases the Marwar region's dedication to water conservation and the cultural importance of stepwells in Rajasthan. Today, it stands as a restored and revitalized heritage site, offering visitors a peaceful retreat in the heart of Jodhpur, where they can appreciate its historical significance and ornate beauty.
